The Two Costs Nobody Counts Before Launching a Bundle Discount

The message we get most often after a merchant's first bundle campaign is some version of this: revenue moved, so why didn't profit? Usually because two costs went into the campaign and only one of them showed up in the report.

The two costs that don't appear in bundle revenue

Somebody had to pay for the traffic

A bundle page doesn't get found on its own. It needs an email, a few posts, usually some paid spend, just to put people in front of the offer. And a visitor on a bundle page is not a sale.

If it converts, good. If it doesn't, you paid to advertise a discount nobody accepted.

The discount comes off products that were selling anyway

The bundle exists because of the markdown. That markdown is your margin, on items that were moving at full price last week.

Ad spend on the way in, margin off the top on the way out. One uncertain sale funding both.

What shoppers learn when the discount never ends

Customers read your store over time, not one visit at a time.

Run a bundle offer every week of the year and regulars stop buying between offers. They've learned there's always another one coming. You trained them.

There's a second reading, and it's worse. A markdown that never lifts tells people the full price was never real. Once a shopper thinks that, they start price-comparing you, and comparison shopping is a fight most independent stores lose.

My honest position: a bundle discount running 365 days a year isn't a promotion. It's your new price list with extra steps.

The other thing merchants notice late is what happens to the items nobody wanted. Somebody buys a four-item box for the two things they came for. The rest gets regifted or sits in a drawer. You paid margin to hand over inventory that didn't win a customer, just moved a unit.

Where bundles genuinely win

Bundles aren't the problem here. Permanent discounting is. There are jobs a bundle does that nothing else does as well:

  • A gift set where the exact contents are the product. That's a Fixed Bundle, and the curation is the value, not the markdown.

  • Letting shoppers assemble their own set. Build Your Box lifts order value without you guessing at combinations.

  • Genuine quantity buying, where a Volume Discount reflects a real cost saving on your side.

  • Clearing a specific SKU by a specific date, with an end date you actually honour.

The pattern in all four: a bundle is a merchandising decision with a start and a stop. Our bundle app runs seven formats, and the merchants who get the most out of it treat campaigns as campaigns.

The quieter lever: one relevant add-on, no discount

For the other fifty weeks, there's a cheaper move. Show the thing that goes with what someone is already looking at, and don't discount anything.

That's what AddOn Suggest does. The add-on sits on the product page next to the item being viewed, the customer ticks a box to include it, and the existing Add to Cart button takes both. No second cart step, no popup, no interstitial. The price total updates as they tick, so nobody gets a surprise at checkout.

Nothing is marked down. The pitch is relevance at the one moment the shopper has their wallet out.

You pick the pairings, not an algorithm

Every add-on set is hand-picked by you. No engine deciding what belongs next to your products, no recommendations appearing on your storefront that you haven't seen.

That's deliberate. You know your catalogue. An algorithm knows your order table.

Add-ons aren't only extra products

An add-on can be a warranty, gift wrapping, shipping protection, a gift note. Anything a customer might reasonably want attached to what they're buying.

The performance question, answered properly

Fair concern with any storefront widget: what does it cost the page?

Add-on configuration lives in Shopify metafields, so it arrives with the product page instead of firing a separate request after load. It renders through a native app block inside your theme, using your theme's own styles.

The widget also reserves its space before it paints. That's the part most bolted-on widgets skip, and it's why they shove your Add to Cart button down half a second after load and wreck your layout shift score.

Try it on a few products first

Start narrow. Pick your three best sellers, attach one obvious add-on to each, and leave it a fortnight. The free plan covers up to five active add-on sets, which is enough to know whether your customers bite. Unlimited sets are a one-time $2.99.

Not sure whether your catalogue suits bundles or add-ons? Send us your product list and we'll tell you straight.
